A few tips when dealing with Skin conditions

Chronic skin conditions like Eczema, Psoriasis and Acne typically aren’t curable, but they can be managed. For some drugs may be necessary, but others it may be a matter of knowing some of your triggers. If your new to these conditions or if you need a reminder, we have put together some tips to consider as follow:

Stress

As you probably know you are probably more prone to breakouts during times of stress. You may not be able to eliminate the stress but reducing your stress can help. Make time to relax, meditate, take a walk, do something you enjoy. Anything that can improve your mental state, can also improve your hormones and immune system, which have a huge role in the health of our skin.

How you live

Do you smoke or drink alcohol? Do you take any medications or nutrient supplements? Remember some of these activities can harm your skin. Smoking should be avoided, while alcohol consumption should be kept to a minimum. Always consult your doctor about the medications you are using, even with over the counter medications and supplements as they can interfere with each other and trigger a skin condition.

Another thing to consider is your clothing, towels and bedding. Does any of these make you itch or irritate your skin? It may mean you need to avoid that fabric e.g. some people find wool makes them very itchy.

Keeping clean is important, but many of the soaps, body washes and detergents commonly found in your local supermarket need to be avoided, as they contain ingredients that are very harsh on the skin, drying it out and often irritating the reaction sites. To reduce flare-ups use a gentle wash that is naturally moisturising, helping to keep skin feeling soft and supple, while also pH balanced and low on suds (surfactants), often a great source of irritation. The time of the year

Do ever notice your skin getting drier in winter? The cold outdoors and then the central heating of our homes puts a bit of stress on our skin. Protecting our skin from the harsh elements is important by wearing hats, scarfs and gloves, but also moisturising our skin. A good protective moisturiser is very important.

Avoiding Infections

When you are not well, your skin is not well. Your immune system is fighting an infection which means your skin is more likely to be prompted to have a breakout. If the infection is on the skin, the ointments and medications can be harsh and exacerbate the skin condition. If seeing a new health professional or doctor, always make sure they know you have a pre-existing skin condition and ask if the medicine is safe for you. As said above, make sure your doctor knows about everything you take, including over-the-counter medicines.
